The following chart represents the value per head sold at Norton Livestock for each of the quarters presented. We have taken the gross dollar value divided by the number of head sold (a mix of cows, pairs, calves, feeder cattle, etc.). This results in a broad trend line of cattle prices at the local market. Caution: This data is not comparable from sale barn to sale barn as the mix of cattle may vary significantly. Furthermore, the mix of cattle sold varies from quarter to quarter.

Most Recent Week's Market Report and Commentary

January 8, 2026. We had a nice run of cattle to start 2026 this week. Every class of cattle on the calf and feeder side are higher with light cattle seeing the biggest gains. About a week ago fats were $230 cwt. and I now hear of some going out next week with a $237 cwt. price tag on them. That, along with stronger prices on the board, are making this cash market where it is. I’m hearing a little talk about folks thinking about buying revenue protection for upcoming cattle they plan to raise. I hear it looks attractive. I don’t know all the particulars but for a cow calf guy it might be worth a look. We’re lining up another nice sale for next week (January 15) so see one of us to consign. Bred heifers and stock cows along with our regular sale on the 22nd.
