Key General Market Data

The following chart represents the value per head sold at Norton Livestock for each of the quarters presented. We have taken the gross dollar value divided by the number of head sold (a mix of cows, pairs, calves, feeder cattle, etc.). This results in a broad trend line of cattle prices at the local market. Caution: This data is not comparable from sale barn to sale barn as the mix of cattle may vary significantly. Furthermore, the mix of cattle sold varies from quarter to quarter.

Most Recent Week's Market Report and Commentary

September 3, 2026. We’ve been on an up cattle market since 2022 and it's kind of hard to see it show up much less drop $50 cwt on a lot of classes of cattle. Even weigh up cows and bulls are $30 cheaper. Calf prices have held up the best with buyers hoping for better prices to come but there is a lot of red ink on most classes of cattle right now, as far as close-outs go. It’s the nature of the beast. I think most cattle people realize market swings nd cycles happen. They always have but pretty much no one has appreciated having our industry called out for producing a product they think is too expensive. It is frustrating. Special calf and feeder sale next week on September 10th. Call myself or any of our fieldmen. Cody Miller has joined our staff and will be working predominantly in the eastern part of our trade area. His number is 785-533-3300. Cody also auctions for us on sale day. Try to stay cool.

Steers:
3 – 632# – 367.50

27 – 757# – 346.00

4 – 1011# – 286.00

Heifers:
9 – 1006# – $265.00 pregged open

Cows & Heiferettes:
Couple of younger short bred cows brought $194 to $195 with most salvage cows bringing $141 to $161
Bulls: Top bull: $194.00/cwt.
